Recovery Through Comedy

Scottish Veterans Commissioner Susie Hamilton enjoys the Recovery Through Comedy show at the Poppy FactoryI was lucky enough to get a ticket for a special comedy show at this year’s Fringe, starring veterans from RBL's Recovery Through Comedy programme. The innovative five-day course teaches comedy techniques to improve self-confidence and wellbeing, and the participants I saw at the Poppy Factory last month had the audience in absolute stitches! You can read more about the show and the performers here.

I was greatly honoured to speak at the Scottish Region Royal Artillery Association Summer Meeting in Edinburgh. I very much enjoyed meeting members and it was interesting to hear the Association's innovative plans for the future.

Marking one year in post

Scottish Veterans Commissioner Susie Hamilton meets veterans at Lady Haig's Poppy FactoryIt’s hard to believe I’ve been in the SVC role for a whole year. I’ve had a really interesting year and am hugely grateful to all of the individuals and organisation who took time to chat with me. Forces Children Scotland marked the 5th anniversary of their rebrand today with a joyful celebration of five recent projects delivered with and for children and young people from Forces and veteran families.
I was delighted to present medals to some of the young people who co-produced the Forces Children’s Rights Charter, recognising their nominations for the Celebrating Forces Families Awards — a well-deserved tribute to their dedication and impact.
Meanwhile, also at Edinburgh Napier University’s Craiglockhart Campus, the Armed Forces Community Big Day Out was in full swing. The event was officially opened by the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, Cllr Robert Aldridge, and attended by the Armed Forces Minister, Louise Sandher-Jones MP — a fantastic show of support for our armed forces community.

Today I’ve published my new report on veterans and employment.

Employment is key to a successful transition to civilian life, and while most veterans go on to thrive in second careers, some still need support.

Scotland has made strong progress, but more can be done. We must turn intent into consistent action, strengthen leadership and data, and ensure every veteran can access the opportunities available.

A constructive introductory meeting today with Jamie Hepburn MSP, Minister for Veterans. We reflected on progress made in recent years and the challenges ahead. Key priorities discussed included the Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Pathway, Op Banner veterans, the Veterans Homelessness Prevention Pathway, and extending the Armed Forces Covenant.

I look forward to working with the Minister to support our Armed Forces and veteran community.

It was a real pleasure to join the Veterans Scotland AGM, led by their Chair Emma Watson Mack. It is clear that Scotland has a dynamic and collaborative 3rd Sector supporting our Armed Forces and Veteran community, making a real impact on the lives of those who serve or have served.
