Veterans Housing Scotland

I attended the launch of Veterans Housing Scotland’s campaign to secure 25 more homes for veterans by 2025.

The campaign promotes partnerships between charities and social housing providers which will enable veterans to be nominated for social tenancies – an effective approach which I fully endorse.

2025 campaign

Midlothian Council was the first housing provider to sign up, committing to allocate two properties a year to nominated disabled veterans and their families – an encouraging start. The very talented Edinburgh Military Wives Choir provided splendid entertainment for the evening.

I attended a fascinating event this week.

We heard about Forces in Mind Trust's new 'FiMT Challenges' initiative - a fresh approach to accelerating positive change for the Armed Forces Community.

It was also a pleasure to meet Matt Bazeley OBE, new CEO of Forces Employment Charity, and hear his vision for supporting veterans as they transition into and progress through civilian employment.

Some really insightful and encouraging conversations about collaboration and innovation across the sector.

Yesterday, the Veterans Commissioners for Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales met with Sir Chris Bryant MP, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Wes Streeting MP, Secretary of State for Defence, Calvin Bailey MBE MP, Minister for Veterans and People, and Sarah Owen MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, to discuss the Northern Ireland Troubles Bill.
It was a welcome opportunity to raise the concerns of the veteran community about the legislation and to have an open and candid discussion about the way forward.

The Royal Air Force is the lead Service for this year's Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. It was a huge pleasure to meet some of the outstanding musicians following the performance which featured bands from around the globe.

The REMT raises vital funds for charities that support Scottish music and dance as well as the Armed Forces and veteran community.
