Progress reports

An important aspect of the SVC role is to provide scrutiny and supportive challenge to policy makers and those providing services to the veteran community. Beginning in 2019, the SVC has published an annual electronic Progress Report tracking the progress made in implementing the Commissioner’s recommendations from his / her thematic reports. The electronic reports highlight successes as well as areas requiring more attention.

Since the office of the SVC was established in 2014 there have been 10 thematic reports published, resulting in a total of 87 recommendations made to Scottish Ministers, all of which have been accepted in full. The 6 most recent recommendations made in 2024 will be assessed for the first time in 2025.

A pleasure to catch up with Sue Raw, Secretary of the War Widows Association following the extraordinarily poignant VJ Day 80 Anniversary Service at the Scottish National War Memorial.

During the service we heard incredibly moving accounts from veterans and children of veterans. These brought to life the brutal conflict, which saw some of the most intense fighting of WWII and unspeakable cruelty toward prisoners of war. It reminds us of the debt that society owes to those who secured our country's freedom, and those who continue to do so.

This Friday marks 80 years since Victory over Japan Day - when World War Two ended. We honour the courage and sacrifice of all Allied forces, remember the families who waited at home, and give thanks for the resilience of those faced with the enormous challenge of rebuilding.

A useful meeting with CEO Abby Dryden, Margaret Partridge and Robert Reid from Defence Medical Welfare Service (@thedmws). Good to hear about the partnerships they are involved in across Scotland to support veterans who come in to contact with the health service.
