What does the Commissioner do?

The Commissioner’s role, as laid down by the terms of their appointment by Scottish Ministers, is to:

  • be open and accessible to the real life experiences of individual veterans and use information about them to shape priorities and drive improvement in public services;
  • raise the profile of veterans within Scotland, promoting wider recognition of their skills, experience and potential and further promoting their value as assets to communities and employers;
  • enhance focus on delivery of shared outcomes for veterans through collaboration, building on and complementing the work of partners and stakeholders;
  • improve communication, co-ordination and integration, joining up services where appropriate;
  • chair the Scottish Veterans Fund Panel to ensure that robust recommendations and appropriate applications for the Fund are presented to the Cabinet Secretary for Veterans, and
  • improve outcomes for Armed Forces and Veterans’ Families, recognising that they too require support, including during periods of transition.

Yesterday, on the 80th anniversary of VE Day, the SVC Office was represented at an Unforgotten Forces event in Stirling. We heard interesting sessions on substance abuse and the contribution of women veterans, ending with a singalong. More than 30 veteran organisations were represented - thanks to all for an enjoyable and thought-provoking day.

Very proud to attend the VE Day 80 Service of Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey today, along with the @niveteranscommissioner David Johnstone. A very moving event which reflected the nation's gratitude towards all who contributed to the liberation of Europe in 1945 and acknowledged the sacrifices of those who did not come home, and the loved ones who grieved their loss.

On the 80th anniversary of VE Day, we honour the extraordinary generation who served during WWII - on land, at sea and in the air, at home and overseas.

Their courage and sacrifice laid the foundations for peace and the freedoms we enjoy today.

We will remember them.
